Introduction to the new forum

Post by Andreas_Rottler »

Hello to everyone!

Since Forumromanum has stopped their service I have set up a new forum on the Bricks Webspace.

This is running using phpBB. I have never used this before - so, please be patient with me. It will take a while until eveything will run.

I have requested getting the old postings from Forumromanum. Hopefully I can import the old postings.

Right now, it would be good if some users register to the new forum and try to post something in this thread. I hope I have set the permissions correctly.

I managed to get registered but I have to admit it took me two failures of the CAPTCHA before I succeeded on try number 3.

The captcha used here for registration is nuts. I feel like modern AIs might do better with these than humans do, lol.

Yesterday I've finally got my own script to work (job/procrastination/heatwave were not nice to me so it took much longer than it should) and I technically have an archive which I think is correct (albeit without string replacements for smileys and such yet), but it's a custom pile of self-made JSON, so obviously if you get a full CSV from ForumRomanum there might be a nicer way to import this.

Also, this looks like you're running it on your actual server, correct? If so, you should have full access to the database in ways that free turnkey services usually don't give, so an import should be theoretically possible in some way. (If you set up e.g. a Forumotion phpBB forum, they don't give you a way to directly import stuff to the database.)

I attempted to set up a FreeFlarum forum of my own for testing (link never published anywhere, so no confusion), since FreeFlarum does give you full database access without needing a different host, but making Flarum look more old-school seems rather painful and I haven't managed it to a satisfying degree.

Yes, I have full access to the database and there is a tool named phpMyAdmin installed which has an import option, also from CSV.
So far I did not get anything from Forumromanum, so I will wait ...
