Which term is coded on the right side of the image below?
Correct answer: 3150 +/- 2%
Explanation:
This one is based on resistor color codes. Today there are 4-band and 5-band color codes.
You can find an overview on color coding here: Resistor color codes.
The color code for the 5-band resistors in this example are not matching the current standard. A couple of years ago when 5-band color codes were rarely used a different system for coding was used:
To the standard 4-band code a fifth band was added. Today this ring would be added as third ring which and the fourth ring would have another color.
Here is how the system works:
4-band color:
first band : first number A
second band : second number B
third band : multiplier M
forth band : tolerance T
example: A=1, B=2, M=x100, D=5% => 1200 +/- 5%
5-band color (today):
first band : first number A
second band : second number B
third band : third number C
forth band : multiplier M
fifth band : tolerance T
example: A=1, B=2, C=3, M=x100, D=5% => 12300 +/- 5%
5-band color (former times):
first band : first number A
second band : second number B
third band : multiplier M
forth band : tolerance T
fifth band : third number C
example: A=1, B=2, M=x100, D=5% , C=3 => 1230 +/- 5%, first multiply AB (like a 4-band resistor), then put in the third number!
The old system is used for the 5-band colors in this example.
